Aiden could feel his father losing interest in their conversation and grew anxious as time ran out. A knock at the door interrupted Aiden's rant about John being a hypocrite for not giving him a second chance—or more realistically, a third chance—when suddenly, Hank stepped in.

"Sorry to interrupt," he said. "There are a couple of guys taking out carpet in the storage room. One of them I caught smoking a joint last night, the other I've never seen before. They said they've talked to Aiden?"

Aiden braced himself for the worst and knew he needed to put on an academy-award-winning act. "Yeah, I told them to do that. The other units are all done, and that's the last room with carpet in it."

I'll go talk to them," John said.

Hank followed him closely and Aiden trailed back, soaked in a cold sweat.

When he got to the storage room door, Manuel and Butch glared at him like a couple of trapped rabid dogs. They were dirty from crawling under the building, but luckily none of them had any blood that Aiden could see.

Hank walked over to the men and stood next to the rolled-up carpet. "This is the guy I caught last night. Said he was staying in room one-eleven."

John shook his head. "I’ve never met this man before. And I definitely didn’t give him a room. Aiden, you said you met him?"

Things were about to go south fast, and Aiden needed to come up with an explanation. "Yes, he came in earlier this week. You were out at Home Depot, but I knew you wouldn’t turn him away."

"I wouldn’t have turned him away, but there is a strict vetting process here," John said and turned his attention to Manuel. "I’m sorry, but you can’t just crash in any of our rooms either. Come on, Aiden, you know that?"

Aiden was quick on his feet and said slyly, "I only did what I thought you would do."

John took a deep breath, and Aiden could see he was trying to stay polite. "Our rules here are strict for a reason. We want this to be a safe place, and if you want to work here and have a place to stay, I am going to need to get to know you," John said.

Manuel took this as an opportunity for he and Butch to bail. "It's fine, I understand. I already broke the rules and I’ve only been here a few days."

He started to make a break for the doorway, but John stopped him. "No, no, stop. What are your guys' names?"

"My name is Jamie, and this is my friend, Robert. He's been living out of his truck for a few months, and I told him he might have a place to stay if he helped me rip out this carpet," Manuel said.

John tilted his head, looking down at the floor. "Why did you only do this side of the room?"

Butch stepped in, seeing a frozen Manuel, and pointed to the boxes, desk, and chair cluttering the other half of the room.
